20 Songs You Used To Love…But Now Hate So Much

overplayed-radio-songs

Thank you over saturated radio play!  You have successfully made me hate popular music!  But you know why it’s so popular? Because you play the same song every 15 minutes, for weeks and months on end until a song I once loved to listen to has to now be taken off my iPod so I don’t live in a perpetual hell of repeat!  Bastards!  But I must admit this list was far too easy for me to compile even by my standards.  Also, it is not long enough! I only got to 20 before my brain started coming out of my ears like common sense from a teenage boy at his first strip club!  With that said, I give you my picks for the top 20 songs you used to love but, thanks to an over saturation on public radio, you now hate so very, very much.  I will admit that a few of these I could totally drunk karaoke to so I can’t give up on them entirely while others…I have my reasons.

Supermassive Black Hole – Muse

I used to love Muse.  I thought they were an awesome band with a great sound…until Twilight.  Remember that one?  This song was, for some reason, put onto the soundtrack of one of the highest grossing soul destroying movies of all time!  Now, when this song plays, I have a teenager squeal about, “This was playing when Edward was playing baseball!” and I’m over here going “What?”

My Heart Will Go On – Celine Dion

I still like this song…in moderation. I am so happy this song is nearly 20 years old and doesn’t really play on the radio that much anymore.  When I was in high school it was this song, commercial, 2 other songs then this song again.  I loved that SNL skit that made fun of it…cause I couldn’t like it so I might has well have made fun of it.

Smells Like Teen Spirit – Nivana

Three words : FUCK THIS SONG!  I have heard this song at least a million times!  I’m not saying it’s bad, not at all.  This is a great Nirvana song…that radio stations play everyday at least a dozen times!  Why?! There is so much more music made everyday to ignore it just to try to get Kurt Cobain to come back to life people!

Free Bird – Lyrnyrd Skynyrd

I’m from Jacksonville, FL…where this band is from.  Pity me all you wish.  I did get to see them in concert and they were spectacular…all 15 minutes they played this song.

Uptown Funk – Mark Ronson feat. Bruno Mars

And now we have a song that represents E! Entertainment TV…yay.  This is a recent addition and there are at least three major radio stations that play this every hour plus I get to hear it on TV when I choose to watch it.

Welcome to the Jungle – Guns n’ Roses

There are some great songs off this bands debut album…and we get to hear this one everyday.  I love GnR but heaven help me if I can’t get Slayer on the radio!

Tainted Love – Soft Cell

If it’s not this version it’s Marilyn Manson’s and I would love for it to stop!

The Freshman – The Verve Pipe

I didn’t even like this song when it came out!  Please, just please, stop playing this retched song!

Rain – Blind Melon

This one ranks up there with Nirvana since both front men are gone and the fans won’t let them leave.  I always found this song a bit annoying at times and all I see is a dancing bumblebee and that’s damn close to clowns!

Hotel California – The Eagles

This is just one song by this band I choose to include. Now, this is one of those that I could tolerate since I always visualize a horror movie when I hear it but it is still way overplayed!

Love Shack – B-52’s

Enough…just enough.

Come Together – The Beatles

Sooooo, I’m not a huge Beatles fan.  There I said it!  But I do know that they had a lot of hit singles so why on Anne Rice’s burning crucifix is this the only one they play!?

Jessie’s Girl – Rick Springfield

I get that this is a one hit wonder but for the love of Winter Soldier why do we always have to have a vocabulary lesson when we hear it.  Yes, I do know what “moot” means you uncouth ass!

Livin on a Prayer – Bon Jovi

This is one I can still jam out to but I would prefer another song off the “Slippery When Wet” album..mainly Raise Your Hands!

Bohemian Rhaspsody – Queen

I’m saying nothing bad about them…just that DJ’s play this song too much.  Love you Freddie!

Good Riddance (Time of your Life) – Greenday

Like The Freshman, this song is horrible to me.  I immediately change the station when I hear it and I have no regrets of doing so.

American Pie – Don Cochran

(By the way: totally jamming out to that Bon Jovi mentioned above) So this is a one hit wonder that was also a “historical” song.  Sadly, no matter how many time you play it on the radio today, it’s not going to get the younger generation to understand it with repeated saturation.

Jack and Diane – John Mellencamp

I think this song has been playing steadily on the radio for the last 30 years or so.  He’s released a lot more albums DJ’s…please listen to those too.

Sweet Home Alabama – Lynyrd Skynyrd

And so good had to put two on this list!  I live in the south, if they don’t play this song I think many people get offended…not me, but people.

Drops of Jupiter – Train

Anything by this band can stop playing right about now please.  No more pain…no more.

Music Nostaglia – 5 Great Songs of ’03

So we’re kinda into a little bit of a transitional phase right now.  We, America, are now at war and a lot of musicians go more towards the sentimental whereas some go straight to anger and dysfunction.  Alright in my book!  I think America continues to need a little dysfunction…we put that ‘fun’ in dysfunction (quote from old radio station that used to play good music but sold out because they couldn’t keep their traps shut about semen…just saying).

Unwell – Matchbox 20

A band that, sadly, did not survive the entire length of the new decade…but Rob Thomas did!  Too bad!  This band was actually really good and I myself shall miss them.  And who wouldn’t miss a band who can make delirium and madness a catchy tune!

I’m With You – Avril Lavigne

A sad song by the Canadian born singer but a much relieved departure from the Sk8er Boy girl!  A much, much relieved departure!  And congrats to the missus, Mrs. Chad Kroger!

Calling All Angels – Train

And this is one of those sentimental songs mentioned in the intro.  Yep!  I know!  There are a ton of these that popped up in the early decade!  But Train is fabulous and pulls off this calmed down diddy with a rock star look and feel!

Headstrong – Trapt

And now to the angry song!  I totally dig this song since this was a great big “fuck you!” at a time when most of us were feeling sheepish and small.  9/11 took a huge toll on America and I think this track was like the angry mans theme to stop taking shit and fight back with at least our courage intact.  At least that’s what it meant for me and my misfit band of freaks!

When I’m Gone – 3 Doors Down

And now a song that actually meant a great deal to me but not in 2003.  My father was activated Military in 2000, 2005, and 2009 for Kuwait and Iraq and this song was very sentimental to me and my family when he left.  So this ones kinda personal.

10 Incredible J-Metal Bands – Part 1

J-metal is a branch of Japanese music that says what it basically is…metal!  They play hard, they play fast, and some play with a shock value that makes Marilyn Manson look like a Backstreet Boy!  As a matter of fact, many j-metal bands probably use that as a yard stick so to speak.  They’re wild, they’re crazy, and they can rock your world!

What many people don’t see in Japanese music is there are so many facets and genres that intertwine and thread around and through each other that it can get confusing…but fun!  J-metal is one of the biggest and most well known in the States.  The difference between us and them?  They have a completely different mentality!  For example, Metallic would never wear makeup or dress in costume…not even if the price was right!  But Japanese musicians, J-metal included, can perform in any circumstance wearing a pair of 7 inch platforms, garters, and full on bedazzled jackets and still play hard and fast!  That is awesome!

WARNING: You may notice later in other lists that some bands cross over many different genres.  When this occurs (because it’s not a question of “if” but “when”) always keep an open mind.

So let’s get down to business!  Here part 1 of the Most Incredible J-Metal Bands!

10. Malice Mizer

I put this band so high up in the list since the original members have long since moved on to other things.  Gackt is the equivalent to God, Kami unfortunately died in 1999, and Kozi left in 2001.  Mana, the Gothic Lolita guru, kept the band alive before embarking on Moi dix Mois.  The band saw many changes since it was not only Gothic and dare I say carnival-like with harpsichords and strong piano with steely guitars, but then just went goth…and no, that is NOT the same as Gothic.  I still love this band and for me the height of their popularity in the late 90’s will always be the best for this awesome band!  (the singer in this video is not Gackt, btw)

9. Girugamesh

I actually first saw this band on the cover of Cure magazine ( a Japanese rock and visual kei magazine) and thought they looked cool.  To an outsider just getting into Japanese music, many are deceived.  Girugamesh is technically visual kei but they are as heavy as you can get!  Nowadays, the band has put aside their frilly leathery costumes for universal rock apparel and have become so popular that they now play venues around the world including the US (if you are in the know then you know this is a big deal!)

8. Sadie

This band lies on the cusp between metal and rock (even though I am one of those people who could give a damn about separating them…I love them both and hate segregating them!).  Their style is a subtle visual kei and their music is hard but not so hard that it leaves you damaged like many metal bands.  I guess for many, the dark guyliner and black eyeshadow throws them into the visual category.

7. Deathgaze

Yeah, when talking metal it’s hard not to have a band with “death” in their title.  This band uses blood and lots of it to get their musical style across!  And what’s better than one great metal band is when two great metal bands join together for an album!  That is what Deathgaze did with #9 Girugamesh in 2007.

6. BORN

I only recently discovered this band but love their visual style!  You see, what you have to get when watching the band after having listened to the band is what you see might not be what you thought when you heard them.  Born is like that.  They have devil horns, they wear liquid latex, and don makeup and falsies.  It’s what’s popular in Japan and for many different groups so…there you go.  You either love it or hate it but I doubt it’s going anywhere anytime soon.

5. Nightmare

Their goal, to scare the living hell out of you!  Well, at least when they started.  One thing I love about Japanese music is they love to experiment…with music!  Yes, music!  Their not afraid to explore into the unknown regions of electronica and pop/jazz which is what Nightmare does on occasion.  It just proves that you don’t have to be chained to a stereotype even though that’s what a lot of fans like.

4. Maximum the Hormone

As with so many bands their name is both memorable and confusing at the same time!  This band can rock so hard that they leave you with that gooey disoriented feeling that should be left over from an awesome metal performance!  And these kids don’t play.  They wear the gold plated grills, they head bang, and they mean it!

3. Phantasmagoria

Another band I was introduced to through Cure.  Sadly, this is one of those bands that also recently broke up.  Another tragedy of the Japanese music scene.  This band was a really extreme Malice Mizer band, not in musical style but fashion only they stepped it up a notch…that went to Mars!  They stuck with their visual kei roots until the end which was in 2010.

2. The GazettE

What can I say about this band?  I fucking love this band!  There is no denying their staying power.  Their music ranges from heavy to melodic and they have some of the greatest shows ever.  They started visual kei and still maintain a bit of that gravity defying hair and garter belts, but it’s not what they wear it’s what they say.  They say it loud and proud and give audiences exactly what they want!  I guarantee when you hear “Filth in the Beauty” you will head bang until they feel it in China!

1. Dir en Grey

Even though I am more of a GazettE fan then a diruphile, I still really dig these guys.  I’m not the authority, that would go to Leola, but I had to see them live to get it.  And I suggest that to anyone who has ever heard their stuff and couldn’t get into them.  Go see them live, they’ll change your mind!  They’re hard and shocking and totally worth seeing before you die!  The reason their #1…they have been around for 15 years, Kyo (lead singer) has blown out his voice numerous times but still keeps coming back for more!  People admire them, I’ve seen some who worship them and some who copy them.  I think that means a little something for their popularity!

So there are my first 10 Japanese metal bands!  I know…I KNOW that most people will not agree with me on my list and that’s alright.  Everyone has their favorites and there are many more bands out there that are worth a listen.  If you guys have any suggestions for me or bands you’d like me to check out, just drop a message below.  Just no shout outs please…they do nothing for me or my figure!

Music Nostalgia – 5 Great Songs of ’73

Who was waiting for Aerosmith?  I know I was!  This is also the beginning of Pink Floyd and the slow, poisonous defeat of country into it’s own channels of music.  Don’t get me wrong, I actually really like country, but mainstream USA is about to segregate themselves faster than a restaurant in 1960!  ::sigh:: Can’t we all just get along?

Lynyrd Skynyrd – Free Bird

Absolutely, positively the most incredible example of rock and roll that can be found in this decade!  I know of Japanese musicians today who claim this song as the reason they are in the business to start with!  This marks Skynyd’s longest song…lasting over 14 minutes during concerts!

Aerosmith – Dream On

I have to admit that I am an Aerosmith fan…80’s Aerosmith, but their earlier music doesn’t disappoint!  I heard this song on a compilation CD and thought it was current.  I had no idea it was from the 70’s.  That is a cool song!

Pink Floyd – Money

Floyd is not for everyone.  Their earlier stuff was very experimental and lasted forever!  This is was a great hit for this band since it was a deceiving precursor of The Wall!  That is for later on…and you just wait till I mention the movie!

The Sweet – Ballroom Blitz

Admitedly, I again heard this song for the first time on the Wayne’s World soundtrack!  I love how at the start, when the boys make their introductions, that they sound like their phone sex callers…or they sound gay either one.

Dolly Parton – Jolene

I would have beaten myself if I hadn’t put Dolly on this list!  She’s phenomenal!  I was actually supposed to be named after this song, but after having heard the lyrics I don’t know if I wanted to be named after a man-stealing red head!  At least it would have proven how awesomely pretty I am…women need that sometimes!

10 Stalker Songs : Bring Out Your Creeper

Have you ever laid up in your room, lights out, it’s about 3 o’clock in the afternoon, your curtains and blinds are closed, ceiling fan is rockin’ above you and you feel like zoning out…or what me and my friends call wedging out…while listening to music that not only disturbs you but is also really catchy in that creepy, stalker kind of way?  Than do I have the soundtrack for your creep binge!  This is a small list I compiled of songs that have the most suggestive lyrics, tone, and double meaning I have ever enjoyed in my 29 years on this earth!  You have to admit to yourself, if only for a week out of your life, you were a sad, pathetic ball of misery with darker thoughts than your crazy ass ex boyfriends/girlfriends on that weird Japanese rope phase (it’s a long and weird story that I have no interest in sharing) and you listened to some pretty awesome music in that time period.  Let’s be nostalgic!  Turn down the lights, crank up the headphones, and remember to lock your doors…it’s time for the top 10 best stalker songs!

1. Heart – Alone

At first, I never would have imagined this a stalker song, but then you have to really listen!  The whole song is about wanting something and then desiring to be alone with that something.  Yeah…it’s kinda stalkerish.

I hear the ticking of the clock
I’m lying here the room’s pitch dark
I wonder where you are tonight
No answer on the telephone
And the night goes by so very slow
Oh I hope that it won’t end though
Alone

Till now I always got by on my own
I never really cared until I met you
And now it chills me to the bone
How do I get you alone
How do I get you alone

You dont know how long I have wanted
to touch your lips and hold you tight
You don’t know how long I have waited
and I was going to tell you tonight
But the secret is still my own
and my love for you is still unknown
Alone

Till now I always got by on my own
I never really cared until I met you
And now it chills me to the bone

How do I get you alone
How do I get you alone
How do I get you alone
How do I get you alone
Alone, alone

2. Death Cab For Cutie – I Will Possess Your Heart

The title is enough to get your heart racing…or bore you with the incredibly long intro.

How I wish you could see the potential
The potential of you and me
It’s like a book elegantly bound
But in a language that you can’t read just yet
You gotta spend some time, love
You gotta spend some time with me
And I know that you’ll find love
I will possess your heart
You gotta spend some time, love
You gotta spend some time with me
And I know that you’ll find love
I will possess your heart
There are days when outside your window
I see my reflection as I slowly pass
And I long for this mirrored perspective
When we’ll be lovers, lovers at last
You gotta spend some time, love
You gotta spend some time with me
And I know that you’ll find love
I will possess your heart
You gotta spend some time, love
You gotta spend some time with me
And I know that you’ll find love
I will possess your heart
I will possess your heart
I will possess your heart
You reject my advances and desperate pleas
I won’t let you let me down so easily So easily
You gotta spend some time, love
You gotta spend some time with me
And I know that you’ll find love
I will possess your heart
You gotta spend some time, love
You gotta spend some time with me
And I know that you’ll find love
I will possess your heart
You gotta spend some time, love
You gotta spend some time with me
And I know that you’ll find love
I will possess your heart
I will possess your heart
I will possess your heart

3. The Police – Every Breath You Take

This is the absolute, without a doubt, sure-fire quintessential stalker song…and everyone thinks it’s about love.  Ha!  Just read the lyrics, it has everything to do with stalking!

Every breath you take every move you make,
Every bond you break every step you take,
I’ll be watching you.

Every single day every word you say,
Every game you play every night you stay,
I’ll be watching you.

Oh, can’t you see you belong to me.
How my poor heart aches with every step you take.
Every move you make every vow you break,
Every smile you fake every claim you stake,
I’ll be watching you.

Since you’ve gone I been lost without a trace,
I dream at night I can only see your face.
I look around but it’s you I can’t replace,
I feel so cold and I long for your embrace.
I keep crying baby, baby, please.

Oh, can’t you see you belong to me.
How my poor heart aches with every step you take.
Every move you make every vow you break,
Every smile you fake every claim you stake,

I’ll be watching you.
Every move you make.
Every step you take.
I’ll be watching you.
I’ll be watching you.

Every move you make.
Every step you take.
I’ll be watching you.
I’ll be watching you.

Every move you make.
Every step you take.
I’ll be watching you.

4. Dalbello – Gonna Get Close To You

Even though this song is early 80’s, it pushed the limits of MTV and knocked you out of your comfort zone with enough cross dressed obsession to fill every swimming pool Vegas!

I like to look at shadows sweating on the wall
I get excited when I hear footsteps in the hall

La la la la la la la la la la – ah-hah

(Ooh) Outside your balcony… I have a room with a view
(And I’m watching you)
I dial your telephone… each and every afternoon

I wait by your door
‘Til your asleep at night
And when your alone
I’m there when you turn out the light

You fumble for the keys
I’m six or seven steps behind you!
(I’m so close to you)
Are you terrified of me?!
What do I know ’bout you?
How did I find out?

You think I’m a fool or maybe some kind of lunatic
Say I’m wasting my time but I know what to do with it
It’s as plain as black and white…

CHORUS
I’m Gonna Get Close To You
Oh-oh so close to you
I’m Gonna Get Close To You
oh-oh so close…

If you knew my infinite charm …oh oh
There’d be no reason to be so alarmed

Maybe I’m wrong, maybe I’m right, maybe i’m some kind of lunatic
You say I’m wasting all my time, but I know what to do with it
It’s as plain as black and white…

CHORUS
I’m Gonna Get Close To You
Oh-oh so close to you
I’m Gonna Get Close To You
I’m gonna get so…

GUITAR SOLO

CHORUS
I’m Gonna Get Close To You
Oh-oh so close to you
I’m like a hungry criminal
And your protection is minimal
So minimal
I’m gonna get..
Ooh… Ooh-ooh…

CHORUS
I’m Gonna Get Close To You
I’m gonna get close…
I’m Gona Get Close To You
So close
I’m Gonna Get Close To You
So close

5. Burn Season – Closer

This is a really beautiful song and it does have that creep factor to it…quite definitely actually.  But you can’t help but love it!

You say i’m stuck somewhere back in between
My blured memories
Some say I kicked myself right in the face
I’m not as I seem.

I’d erase what you say
Scramble words in the way
But you can’t take away
Turn away
Run away
Fuck with me

Don’t say that its over
I’d kill to be closer
A moment i’m passing to you
But to me
I will wait
And i’ll take
Anything with your name
Don’t say that its over
You can’t live without me

You say theres something wrong in my head
So I like to bleed
You say i’m scaring you now but i’m tired
From watching you sleep

I’d erase what you say
Scramble words in the way
But you can’t take away
Turn away
Run away
Fuck with me

Don’t say that it’s over
I’d kill to be closer
A moment i’m passing to you
But to me
I will wait
And ill take
Anything with your name
Don’t say that its over
You can’t live without me
Live without me
Live without me

But you can’t take away
Turn away
Run away
Fuck with me

Don’t say that it’s over
Don’t say that it’s over
I’d kill to be closer

Dont say that it’s over
I’d kill to be closer
A moment im passing to you
But to me
I will wait
And i’ll take
Anything with your name
Dont say that its over
You cant live without me
(Don’t say that its over)
You cant live without me
(Don’t say that its over)
You cant live without me
(Don’t say that its over)
I’d kill to be closer
I’d kill to be closer
You can’t live without me

6. George Michael – Father Figure

I would like to point out the George is one of the few stars in the 80’s that didn’t piss me off!  And he doesn’t disappoint with this really sexy sounding song…about being a father figure to a model!

That’s all I wanted, something special,
Something sacred in your eyes,
For just one moment, to be bold and naked
At your side

Sometimes I think that you’ll never understand me
Maybe this time is forever, say it can be

That’s all you wanted, something special,
Someone sacred in your life
Just for one moment, to be warm and naked
At my side

Sometimes I think that you’ll never understand me
But something tells me together, we’d be happy

I will be your father figure (Oh baby)
Put your tiny hand in mine (I’d love to)
I will be your preacher teacher (Be your daddy)
Anything you have in mind (It would make me)
I will be your father figure (Very happy)
I have had enough of crime (Please let me)
I will be the one who loves you
till the end of time

That’s all I wanted
But sometimes love can be mistaken for a crime
That’s all I wanted just to see my baby’s blue EYES shine
This time I think that my lover understands me
If we have faith in each other
Then we can be strong

I will be your father figure
Put your tiny hand in mine
I will be your preacher teacher
Anything you have in mind
I will be your father figure
I have had enough of crime
I will be the one who loves you
till the end of time

If you are the desert, I’ll be the sea
If you ever hunger – hunger for me
Whatever you ask for, that’s what I’ll be

So when you remember the ones who have lied
Who said that they cared
But then laughed as you cried
Beautiful darling, don’t think of me

Because all I ever wanted
It’s in your eyes baby, baby
And love can’t lie, no…
(Greet me with the eyes of a child)
My love is always telling me so
(Heaven is a kiss and a smile)
Just hold on, hold on
I won’t let you go, my baby

I will be your father figure
Put your tiny hand in mine
I will be your preacher teacher
Anything you have in mind
I will be your father figure
I have had enough of crime
So I am gonna love you
till the end of time
I will be your father
I will be your preacher
I’ll be your daddy
I will be the one who loves you
till the end of time

7. Falco – Jeanny

Half English…half German…this song is so stalker awesome it’s scary!  It was so creepy, that German radio pulled it after a few just a runs!  And the sequels punch your uneasy button a few times.

Jeanny, Jeanny…

Jeanny, come, come on
Stand up please
You’re getting all wet
It’s getting late, come
We must leave here
Out of the woods
Don’t you understand?

Where is your shoe?
You lost it
When I had to show you the way
Which of us lost?
You, yourself?
I, myself?
Or… we ourselves?

Jeanny, quit livin’ on dreams
Jeanny, life is not what it seems
Such a lonely little girl in a cold, cold world
There’s someone who needs you
Jeanny quit livin’ on dreams
Jeanny, life is not what it seems
You’re lost in the night
Don’t wanna struggle and fight
There’s someone who needs you

It’s cold
We must leave here
Come
Your lipstick is smeared
You bought it and
And I saw it
Too much red on your lips
And you said, “Leave me alone”
But I saw right through you
Eyes say more than words
You need me, don’t you, hmmmh?
Everyone knows, that we’re together
From today,
Now I can hear them, they are coming!

They’re coming!
They are coming to get you.
They won’t find you.
Nobody will find you!
You’re with me.

Jeanny quit livin’ on dreams…

[spoken] Newsflash:
In the last months the number of missing persons has dramatically increased. The latest account from the local police reports another tragic case. It is a matter of a nineteen year old girl who was last seen two weeks ago. The police have not excluded the possiblity that a crime has been committed.

Jeanny…

Jeanny, quit livin’ on dreams…

8. Tommy Tutone – 867-5309

Don’t think it’s a stalker song?  If you can find the video… watch the video…it’s totally a stalker song!

Jenny, Jenny, who can I turn to?
You give me something I can hold onto
I know you think I’m like the others before
Who saw your name and number on the wall

Jenny, I got your number,
I need to make you mine.
Jenny, don’t change your number,
8-6-7-5-3-0-9 (8-6-7-5-3-0-9)
8-6-7-5-3-0-9 (8-6-7-5-3-0-9)

Jenny, Jenny, you’re the girl for me.
You don’t know me but you make me so happy.
I tried to call you before but I lost my nerve.
I tried my imagination, but I was disturbed.

Jenny, I got your number,
I need to make you mine.
Jenny, don’t change your number,
8-6-7-5-3-0-9 (8-6-7-5-3-0-9)

I got your number on the wall!

For a good time, for a good time call….

Jenny, don’t change your number.
I need to make you mine.
Jenny. I’ll call your number,

9. Queensryche – Gonna Get Close To You

So stalkerishly creepy…it’s on the list twice, but this time by heavy metal Queensryche…and no cross dressers!

I like to look at shadows sweating on the wall
I get excited when I hear footsteps in the hall
Outside your balcony I have a room with a view
And I’m watching you

I dial your telephone each and every afternoon
I wait by your door till you’re asleep at night
And when you’re alone I know when you
Turn out the light

I’m gonna get close to you
Oh-Oh so close to you
I’m gonna get close to you
I’m gonna get close

You fumble for your keys
I’m six or seven steps behind you
I’m so close to you
Are you terrified of me? What do I know about you
How did I find out?
You think I’m a fool or maybe some kind of lunatic
Say I’m wasting my time but I know what to do with it
It’s as plain as black and white

I’m gonna get close to you
Oh-Oh so close to you
I’m gonna get close to you
Oh so close

If you knew my infinite charm
There’d be no reason to be so alarmed
Maybe I’m wrong maybe I’m right
Maybe I’m some kind of lunatic
You say I’m wasting all of my time
But I know what to do with it
It is plain as black and white

I’m gonna get close to you
Oh-Oh so close to you
I’m gonna get close to you
I’m like a hungry Criminal
and your protection is minimal
So minimal

10. The Cure – Subway Song

Short, scary, freaky, to the point!

Midnight in the subway
She’s on her way home
She tries hard not to run
But she feels she’s not alone
Echoes of footsteps
Follow close behind
But she dare not turn around

Turn around. . .Turn around. . .turn around. . .

Music Nostalgia – 5 Great Songs of ’56

And so here is the next year on the lists through the decades, year by year, of what I believe to be the most important and most influential songs to be on the radio that particular year.  Or the ones people just might have forgotten about but left a lasting impression on my horribly rock and roll saturated mind.  Now on with it!

Here we go…the best 5 songs out of 1956!

Gale Storm – Teenage Prayer

For those of you still referencing movies to get most of your information about oldies, this song was performed in the 80’s movie Cry Baby, you know that movie with Johnny Depp (normally when I say that everyone’s “Oh yeah!”).  Since a lot of people would not consider this rock and roll…remember when we’re talking about people!  This was the bees knees to a lot of people!

Elvis Presley – Don’t Be Cruel

And Elvis’ first appearance on the list!  How in the hell can anyone talk about the 50’s and not mention Elvis?!  It was 60 years ago and people still love it!  I don’t think I even need to mention his contribution on rock and roll!  As a smaller note, I would have been the loudest screaming bitch at those concerts!

Fats Domino – Blueberry Hill

I was obsessed with this song for almost a week once!  And I was born in the 80’s!  For all the celluloid referrers out there, this was used as a running joke in Happy Days when Archie kept singing it!  It also proved that a song didn’t have to be complex to sound amazing!

Little Richard – Long Tall Sally

I would like to compliment the balls that Little Richard had for even becoming a closeted homosexual black singer/performer in the South during the 50’s.  Props man!  Not to mention that his songs were so cool!

Johnny Cash – I Walk The Line

I would have lynched myself if I hadn’t put Johnny somewhere on the list!  This song was famous during it’s first initial release, but became even more widespread after the movie with the same name was released with Reese Witherspoon.  Back then, country and rock were one in the same and we have to thank country for helping rock along the bumping road to stardom!

So there’s two years down!  Next up in ’57.  It’ll start getting insanely easy and hard for me when I start getting into the late 60’s!

Music Nostalgia – 5 Great Songs of ’55

As a little project that I am starting in music, I would like to reach back to a time when men dressed fabulously and women knew it!  I am going to go through every year of every decade and post my favorite songs from that year, only 5 of them, and say why it was either important for me or why it might have been important to music history in general.

I’ll be kicking off this most kick ass list at 1955.  I do this for the main reason that I believe that’s where I should start it dammit!  This was the year of James Dean, the year of Chuck Berry, the year music became a phenomenon and not just a pleasant pastime.  And here are my top 5 of ’55!

Bill Haley – Rock Around the Clock

What a cool song!  You might recognize this from Happy Days, which was based in the 50’s.  The thing about these songs is they were meant for dancing and that is something I think I missed out on being a product of the 80’s.  The lyrics might not make a shit lot of sense, but who the hell cared when you were dancing on the floor actually achieving rhythmic continuity with the rest of the people around you!

Les Baxter Orchestra – Unchained Melody

That’s right!  This was the first version!  I know you all know this one from The Righteous Brothers, but those crazy easy listening 50’s yuppies soaked this shit in!  They loved listening to elevator music!  I do prefer the remake but this will probably be the only version of this song on the lists.

The Crew Cuts – Earth Angel

Another original version of a very successful song.  You might recognize this song from the spectacular 85 movie Back To The Future.  The best version is with Marvin Berry but these guys did it first.  Again, I prefer the remake but this is still quintessential 50’s dance music!

Chuck Berry – Maybelline

No it is not in honor of makeup, people really called their kids fun names back in the 40’s and 50’s!  This is one of the first great examples of guitar solos…electric guitar solos!  Riffs!  Songs were so simple back then!  It sounds a bit country but it was so rock and roll!

Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers – Why Do Fools Fall In Love

I like this video!  It explains that new fad called rock and roll.  Jazz, vocals, and a great drum beat.  And look how cute they are!!  Their all clean cut and such a fun song!

The next list will be in ’56…because logic dictates it comes after ’55…
