Soundtrack Throwback – The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

Right.  So I know I don’t really have to remind anyone about this soundtrack.  This was the young, teenage, and adults first true listen at Danny Elfman and we were not disappointed!  When this movie came out it started a new genre I like to refer to as “Burtonesque”.  It was dark, it was disturbing, it was absolutely the most beautifully executed movie with such an original story that just made you want to like it.  As Burton is the reason the movie looks the way it does, it’s Elfman who makes it sound so supremely…”Burtonesque”.  From the intro to the dirge band sound, you see Burton everywhere but you hear Elfman!  As a cute side note that I find people who really don’t know the movie at all (I mean AT ALL.  Ones that shame me when they say, “Oh that creepy movie from the 90’s?”) Elfman provides the voice for Jack’s singing voice…I mean, it’s on IMDB for bloody sakes!

So the soundtrack is mostly comprised of wonderfully performed songs that most people today would recognize if they heard it on a louder speaker at a death metal concert or in a bowling alley on Halloween (since this has turned into the anthem at Halloween parties for many).  It has darkness, it has fun, it throws a loop with Oogie Boogie’s Song but it leaves you feeling satisfied that you bought it!  I even know of couples who used Sally and Jack’s finale as their wedding song!  Whatever the reason behind your liking this soundtrack you are not alone.  To this day I will still put this soundtrack on during the holidays because that is exactly how my generation remembers their holidays…with frightening skeletons, possessed dolls, and three creepy dead children kidnapping Santa and feeding him to a Boogie man!  You know!  Just fun cheery stuff!

I’m also adding in here the 2006 Anniversary tracks which were recorded by artists such as Marilyn Manson and Fall Out Boy!  That is how awesome this movie and soundtrack are!  Marilyn fuckin’ Manson loves it!  Also, since the collaboration of both Burton and Elfman became a long standing one I am sure I should do a whole piece on nothing but their work together.  Yes…I think I shall!
