Soundtrack Throwback – Dirty Dancing (1987)

BSO_Dirty_Dancing--FrontalI can’t really mention any kind of soundtrack throwback without mentioning this one now can I!?  This was nostalgia before it was nostalgia!  This was a soundtrack that combined the new and the old and it worked out beautifully!  This was when every girl wanted and liked being called “Baby” and tripped and fumbled their asses to dance the dirty…dancing.  And, let’s be honest, compared to today’s nasty booty dancing you wish your kids danced dirty with Patrick Swayze (insert cry here).

So Dirty Dancing was set in the 1960’s at a resort where they taught you to dance and take risky abortions on the fly.  Since there was a huge resurgence for “nostalgic” movies (ie Peggy Sue Got Married and La Bamba) but they wanted it as modern as they could to keep the 80’s interested, they merged some classy 80’s songs with classic 60’s songs.  The marriage was a cordial one.  And keeping with the tradition of getting actors music contracts as well, Patrick even contributed a very nice number “She’s Like the Wind”…and the adolescent in me giggled…I am sorry.  But I really giggled at “Trot the Fox”!
