10 Animated Music Videos

Back in the day music videos were a fabulous form of musical expression.  Sometimes the artist saw a song in a different way than how their fans saw it.  You got your Madonna videos (Bedtime Stories) that left you in awe…while scratching your head with a butcher knife.  Sometimes, there were things that the artist really couldn’t express with actors and stage sets so they turned to the drawing board…literally.  Sometimes the end result was a sparkling few into a musician’s mind that made you second guess a face to face meeting and put the words “restraining order” into your vocabulary.  So let’s take a creepy peek into the minds of both musician and the artists that bring their dreams, nightmares, fantasies, and bondage fetishes to life.

10. Studio Killers – Ode To The Bouncer

Okay, saw this one and thought the animation was very creative…but it’s all about getting into a night club and having to “persuade” the bouncer to let you in.  And it’s a catchy song…but a weird premise and there is a skull involved…

9. Gorillaz – 19 2000

I have to add these guys in here since their whole persona is animated!  It was a brilliant concept and a damn nice “side” project if you ask me.

8.DyE – Fantasy

The phrase WTF? (only in longer less appropriate form) came out about three dozen times in this really…really fucked up video!  I mean tentacle and testicle chomping fucked up!  Go ahead…you’re old enough to not sleep anymore…or go into a pool for a little late night nookie.

7.The Dears – 22 The Death Of All The Romance

Such a sad and wasteful song.  I like teddy bears so this was a really heart wrenching video.  And then I saw the world had been cut in half and I thought to myself..”Ah the future.  What a grim and dismal place that’s going to be.”

5.Unknown Russian Song

To be honest…I have no clue what song this is!  Truly! It’s Russian…that much I got, but after that…

4.Meiko – Leave the Lights On

I just thought this was a cool song.

3.A-HA – Take On Me

A classic!  I especially liked the version Family Guy did with Chris in the grocery store and this video.  Fucking brilliant!

2.Dire Straits – Money For Nothing

One of the first computer animated videos!  This just demonstrated what everyone thought was cool in the 80’s…and how I miss all of those things!

1. Daft Punk – One More Time

I am not really that big of a Daft Punk fan but I had to throw this video in because the Japanese made a whole movie out of this album!  A whole movie!  That is the longest animated music video yet!

Bonus:  Pink Floyd’s The Wall

That’s right!  The whole movie is nothing but a huge music video but the most memorable scene was with the judge speaking with his anus…classic!

Top 10 Horror Inspired Music Videos

The sad thing is…you already know what’s going to be #1!  I feel I should inform all of you dear readers that though I love Halloween…I’m scared shitless of horror!  I hate gore (though funny when done right aka Evil Dead) it just puts a disconcerting smile on my face knowing that there are some sick fucks out there who get off on dismemberment and fecal projections that most forensic scientists step back going “Wow!  Now that is messed up!”.  Yeah it’s Hollywood, yeah I know it’s fake.  That’s not the deal.  The deal is people actually being fascinated and then lethargic at the sight of some of this stuff!  Have you seen Texas Chainsaw Massacre?  Lots of people have.  Did you know that it’s based on a real story?  Yeah.  The real story isn’t nearly as fucked up as the movie, but the fact that it was BASED ON A REAL STORY!  Get that through first then try to enjoy it!

However, I do love vintage horror movies.  I say the less you see the more disturbing it really is.  Old school horror frightened you by letting your imagination take over.  Nowadays, you don’t need an imagination, but instead an ice pick to help poke your eyes out to take the memory away.  So let’s move on the the top 10 horror inspired music videos!  These are my picks people!  Videos that both fascinated…and frightened the hell out of me!  let it be known that I’m not trying to gross you out merely show a few wonderfully creepy music videos.

10.  Forsaken – Queen of the Damned (Jonathon Davis of KORN)

When this soundtrack came out I loved it!  This was a mock music video was within the movie Queen of the Damned.  If you noticed, it’s based on the old school horror movies such as Nosferatu and has many elements of that era…mixed with a lot of bad ass and awesome!

9. Disconnected – Keane

I’m not a huge Keane fan, but I could live with this.  I thought this video was done very well and had some great elements in it.

8.Somebody’s Watching Me – Rockwell

The only thing this poor bastard had going for him was Michael Jackson’s background vocals! The video sounds old school horror techno? I guess if that’s how you want to take it. As you watch it you can sympathize when you’re in the shower and you feel eyes judging your junk too…I wouldn’t know…but I find that a frightening experience.

7. The Hearts Filthy Lesson – David Bowie

Wow…David.  Whoa.  Yeah.  There is nothing David could do to make me hate him so this happily won’t haunt me for too long. For 1995 this song is fantastic!

6. Fighter – Christina Aguilera

What the…?!  Not how I imagined this video to be at all! Just having this song this much out of context of the song makes it scary enough!

5. Disturbia – Rihanna

This is a cool video and a cool song.  No explanation needed. It has that awesome horror feeling of constriction and grunge! Great song!

4. Wrong – Depeche Mode

Depeche Mode can do no wrong in my eyes…oh!  Ha!  Wrong.  I made that funny. Crazy video though…damn!

3. The Kill – 30 Seconds to Mars

Based off The Shining (one of Stephen Kings better flicks by the way) the shows my awesome Jared Leto in his first hit with his band after breaking from acting. I love how this video is borderline funny because you already know how this story rolls! The animal suit…fucking genius!

2. Sweet Dreams – Marilyn Manson

What the hell man?  You want to talk about scaring the hell out of someone, put them in a room with Marilyn when he’s in role for one of his music videos.  That’ll scare the religion back in them!

1. Thriller – Michael Jackson

You knew this had to be number one!  How can I explain…I just wont.

Music Nostaligia – 5 Great Songs of ’99

That last one!  Hot damn I survived!  I can’t believe it!  And I only had one “What the fuck was I thinking?” moments!  I feel like  accomplished something with this list of the 90’s.  I feel that I might have down some spiritual healing by going back and facing some of my childhood times…and I appreciate the music I listen to now!  Don’t get me wrong, I love a lot of music from this decade, it’s just that all those personal experiences were remembered by listening to all this music…and not all of it was good I can tell you all that!

Snow on the Sahara – Anguun

Thank you MTV late night for this artist of which I would never have found any other time since after this year you began to suck!  This is a rather melodic song for MTV however I like her voice a lot and the album was very goo (anyone who can do a decent cover of Life on Mars by David Bowie is worth anyone’s time!).

Bailamos – Enrique Englesias

And yet ANOTHER genre is introduced right at the end…the Latin invasion!  All types of artists were making it big off of their Hispanic origins now and the big ones were Ricky, this guy, and…Jennifer Lopez?  What?  She may have Spanish blood but she grew up in America!  What kind of an invasion was that?  Well, they did teach up how to speak a little bit of Spanish at a time…hence the Spanish name of this song…which means “I have more money than you..hahaha…” is the translation I gave it.

Blue Monday – Orgy

Hells yeah!  No, wait…Fuck Yeah!  I really love Orgy and I first loved this song just because I saw the image of the CD cover in a catalog and thought they might sound cool.  Thus the love for them began.  This is actually a fantastic remake of a Cure song and I still, to this day, will listen to this song!

The Chemicals Between Us – Bush

I wanted to mention Bush on my list even though my favorite song of theirs was Mouth from the American Werewolf in Paris soundtrack.  They really are pioneers and I thought their stuff was wholly original.

Angel – Sarah McLachlan

Cry bitch…just cry.  I cry even harder when it’s put in an animal abuse video.

Music Nostaligia – 5 Great Songs of ’98

Oh no!  We’re almost to the end…oh, that’s great for me!  But also horrible since this is where it all get’s ugly!  I’m talking Texas Chainsaw Massacre ugly!  Now we are getting to the age of the pop princess which I am totally not getting into at all.  I will mention it…but no!  All genres are mashing together now.  Pop, Rock, Metal, Hip Hop…they’re all living together like a dysfunctional family on Ritalin and mommy’s hit the bottle and daddy has a secret S&M dungeon with trap doors, swings and a secret entrance like Shanghai brothels used to have!

Bittersweet Symphony – The Verve

Recently, this band started crawling on their feet again after a battle with Keith Richards some time after this song came out.  The Verve held their ground but the almighty Richards was far too strong with his years of drug addiction and legendary guitar riffs acting like a shield while he sued the shit out of this band for copyright.  Bastards should have seen it coming!  Well, at lease the song became a hit beforehand!

Kiss The Rain – Billie Myers

The song is sung like the artist is talking to someone on the phone…or stalking them through a window or something.  Lie I said earlier, the 90’s was a time for the inner poet to come out.  Everything was metaphorical!

Ava Adore – Smashing Pumpkins

The last Pumpkins song that I liked.  Hell, it was their second to last album until 2007!

My Heart Will Go On – Celine

THIS SONG WILL NEVER DIE!  Honestly, the song was great the first few times you heard it, then it was good the next hundred, when people were using it for everything is when it started to get annoying…then you wanted to shoot the damn song in the face with a sawed off shotgun at close range all gangsta style!

I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing – Aerosmith

And Aerosmith is still proving they can work that generation gap like a Hollywood hooker on Sunset at 3AM!  This was another soundtrack song…for another movie that Liv Tyler was in and thank God it turned into a hit!  Very awesome song too!

Music Nostaligia – 5 Great Songs of ’97

Moving along now!  We have now entered my high school years.  This was the time of Dawson’s Creek, Felicity, and TRL.  Gone are the days of My So Called Life and Winona Ryder.  This was when all these Shakespearean plays were remade with a more modern flare, showing the real life circumstances of these classic stories.  I can’t really tell you if they were ruined for me or not but I do have to give them props for trying to get my generation learned!

I Want You – Savage Garden

Remember WHAM!?  This was the same kind of story.  No one knew the lead singer was gay, no one questioned it, yet he came out years later.  I still think George did it best though!  I like Savage Garden (based on Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles by the way) since the whole album had a theme!  A theme!  A thought long since lost to corporate radio!

Where Have All The Cowboys Gone – Paula Cole

Of all of Paula’s songs, I tolerate this one the most.  After the unfortunate tragedy of having been the theme for Dawson’s Creek…let’s just say Paula’s production company made the best and the worst choice of her career.  Not only does it get stuck in your head…but you associate it with one of the most angst ridden TV series in history!  But you strike up a good point…I miss John Wayne!

You Must Love Me – Madonna

Back when Madonna still had appeal, this was a great, if not simple, song performed for the movie Evita.  I am on old school Madonna fan, not that Kabbalah loving mother who smothers her fans with Miami rave music.  Sorry, truth hurts.  She was better before she was 40!

#1 Crush – Garbage

And yet another song from a soundtrack but this one was for Romeo and Juliet…the modern day version with Leo and Claire (we’re on a first name bases on this blog).  This song is later going on my stalker list since it’s lyrics aren’t borderline..they’re straight up creepy!

It’s No Good – Depeche Mode

Yay they made it!  It worries me since so many bands couldn’t really survive the 80’s with their pride intact.  But not Depeche Mode!  Damn I love them!  For any of you that have any doubt at how awesome this band is, they are one of the most covered bands on the planet!

Then something weird happened…rock and pop got married and came up with some rather interesting stuff.  Poetry and metaphor became even more important.  It was like the Seattle music scene was evolving into a far more hipper less grungy version of mainstream rock.  I’m not saying that’s a bad thing, I’m just making an observation!  This was the beginning of my high school years so this was what I had to deal with…no wonder I turned to j-rock!  But if I had to listen to anything from the 90’s that didn’t involve Rob Zombie and Godsmack…I guess this is alright!

Follow You Down – Gin Blossoms

See!  This is what I meant!  It’s like when you’re angry and you stop throwing your mom’s porcelain figures of cats and unicorns into you bargain store TV set and you take a deep breathe and try to order a pizza for everyone.  It’s unnerving and awkward at first, but everyone likes you now that you’ve calmed the fuck down (by the way, everyone owes me $5 for the pizza).

Name – the Goo Goo Dolls

I always felt like this song had something to do with the witness protection program…great song…but is it? That’s one of a few reasons I’d never tell other people another persons name.

Sweet Dreams – Labouche

Oh!  Like I said before, I really don’t do trance stuff, but I liked how this song at least started out.  However, the trance kicked in and…well…

Wonderwall – Oasis

I have a cousin who loves this so.  One question…Do I want to be a wonderwall?  What is that anyway?  I’ve been a state of wonder ever since.  Oh!  Was that it?  Was that what a wonderwall is?  A state of wonder?  No…I’m not too sure.  Dammit!  Does anyone really know!  Anyway, I actually really like how this songs sounds and yet another question is brought up.  Where was I when you guys were getting high?

Who Will Save Your Soul – Jewel

Soooo this was the decade of questions was it?  I don’t know.  Everyone…I just don’t know!  Now here’s Jewel asking me who’s gonna save my soul…from what?!  From whom?  Mandingos?  What!?  Better yet, who’s gonna save me from the Macarena, huh?  Answer me that one Jewel!

Music Nostaligia – 5 Great Songs of ’95

Just cranking these bitches out…trying to maintain what little sanity my dominant insanity wishes for me to have!  This year I remember more because it was the last year that MTV played music video…like on rotation…right before their ever popular music show (gag) but they were misleading since they put the same rotation on every morning for a month!  So it was Jovi and Desiree as I recall.  Every morning, for a solid month.  Sad to say, this was a very sad time for music.  And even sadder…it took three boy bands and two teenage pop tart looking deals to get us out of the rut!  And then…the age of the soundtrack!

This Ain’t a Love Song – Bon Jovi

And here it is, the song on constant rotation in the morning on MTV for a solid month!  Now don’t get me wrong, I love Jovi!  And this is a really nice ballad (weird!  “ballad” in the mirror looks the same…Hi random) so I guess looking back on the anguish or repetitiveness…no..it still hurts!

No More I Love You’s –  Annie Lennox

The one thing that stands out for me in this video, that one thing that caught my eyes with meat hooks and plastered me to the screen, the one thing that I wasn’t too sure if I should laugh out loud or take it seriously…the men in tutus.  What in the fuck did that have anything to do with this song?  I love you Annie for the random you bring to our lives!

I’ll Stand By You – The Pretenders

A very awesomely slow song that I still love to listen to.  I just remember thinking, “Wow!  She got him all the way to the tub!  I would have dropped his ass like a scorpion filled plate of spaghetti for being all passed out when I need stuff done!” But then I thought it was a love…thing…I don’t know.  I wouldn’t have taken that shit.

Gangsta’s Paradise – Coolio

Ah damn!  This is it!  And the cool think is I don’t even see Coolio when I watch or listen to this song.  I see the awesome Michell Pfeiffer!  Then I see Coolio flipping his shit when his record company gave permission for Weird Al to do a parody called Amish Paradise (which was also huge).

Run Away – Real McCoy

I can’t really say much about this song since this is DEFINITELY not my taste in music.  However, this was a big deal back then and it needs credit.  My sister had the album (one of the first CD’s she ever bought) but every single song, from the first to the last, sounded exactly the same.  Exactly!  It was all new wave techno dance trance and…ugh!  No!  I’ll just leave it alone.

Now we are coming to what I like to call hippie revival…mixed with over priced quality goods and you have the makings of not one, not two…but three genres!  First out we have the nouveau hippies trying to relive what their parents had back in the day (this will inevitably lead to tragedy) then you have techno-euro beat-electronica-trance kind of stuff, and then you have the mix between the two…the ones who like the hippie music but mixes it with current sounds.  And Hip Hop is still going strong and proud!

The Sign – Ace of Base

I remember when this came out in my last year of elementary school!  You could run fast enough away from this even if you managed to lo-jack the Rocketeer’s rocket pack!  It made the Ankh looks cool again, it was catchy…and sadly this band didn’t really survive the 90’s.  Sad because I always saw them as a my generations Abba!

Shine – Collective Soul

Again, this is one of those songs that plays with my memory when I hear it.  My brother had moved and this was playing in the moving truck on the way back home…in 104 degree heat, no AC, and a hateful brother who’s last hoorah was making my week a living hell!  Classic, loving memories…hot and gross times…

Because the Night – 10000 Maniacs

I didn’t know until after doing extensive research on this song that it’s actually a remake of a remake and others had remade it and so on and so forth…but I think this is a great version!  I always wondered about the name though…where were the 10000 at least people let alone maniacs?

Mary Jane’s Last Dance – Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers

This video was shot when Kim Basinger’s career was on a high note…unlike the broken violin that it is now.  I thought it was a really creative song with a lot of awesome lyrics…until I got old enough to know that it was borderline necrophilia!   Whose idea was it to steal a body from a morgue, dress it up, and stumble thriller with it?  Oh…Tom’s…got it..enough said.

Shoop – Salt-N-Pepa

The only thing I have to comment about this song next to how cool it was back then was the white kids who “shooped” along it…I’m not going any further.

Music Nostaligia – 5 Great Songs of ’93

If you all have noticed I’m just breezing by these posts!  Why?  Maybe because they’re interesting, maybe I have a lot of free time on my hands…and maybe, just maybe, I want to get this decade over with!  I grew up in the 90’s, I was in middle and high school then so this really…really bugs the shit out of me that I have to relive the audible memory of these years!  Hoever, the ones I pick out are really the ones that I like so onward!

Runaway Train – Soul Asylum

::sigh:: Depression all around!  No wonder the suicide rate went up in the early 90’s!  I just remember the music video for this song had a huge and powerful voice to the missing persons community.  It was also a very frightening video to watch since you could see how easy it was for people to get abducted in the US.  The scariest for me was the skin head white van rape…as a woman… that scared the living hell out of me!

The Proclaimers – I’m Gonna Be (5000 Miles)

Finally a perky song!  This was the main soundtrack song for Benny and Joon, a movie with then almost unknown Johnny Depp.  The one thing everybody really likes to do is make that thousand mile sound when that part came up.  They’re Scottish…you know this right?

I’d Do Anything For Love (But I Won’t Do That) – Meat Loaf

What Meatloaf?  Dammit!  What in the hell wouldn’t you do for love?  That is a question everyone and their grandmothers have been asking since this song came out!  What?  Sex? Drugs? Bestiality? Long term life insurance policies?  Sucking down nitrous oxide while wearing a clown mask and trying to make offensive balloon penises while screaming at police “I live on the other side of the rainbow, how about you”?  What?!

Come Undone – Duran Duran

This was a come back of Duran Duran.  This plus Ordinary World became two of their most loved hits and remains some of their biggest hits yet!  The video for this song struck me as odd but I could sort of see it, but I just love how this song sounds nothing like the rest of the album!  Nothing…like…nope.  Great song though!

Livin’ On The Edge – Aerosmith

Happily, Aerosmith saw some of their greatest success when Wayne’s World came out…that and Liv Tyler was put into some of the bands videos along with Alicia Silverstone…the Clueless goddess herself.  So they had a way into the young superficial hipster generation.  I like how their music doesn’t change but their songs are all different!  Rock on!

Music Nostaligia – 5 Great Songs of ’92

Hey guess what all you grunge loving fanatics?  We finally got to Nirvana!  I know!  It’s just like when I did the 60’s and everyone was all like “So, where’s The Beatles?” and I was all like “Right here!” and shit.  Well, here they are…enjoy them because this is the only time they show up not because I don’t like them but there are plenty of other bands that need to be seen.  In the 90’s, since there are now so many genres and sub-genres of music the bands start multiplying like rabbits on Viagra with monthly subscriptions to Penthouse (there’s a mental image for you)!

Tears in Heaven – Eric Clapton

One, if not the, best songs ever to be released EVER!  The saddest part about this song is that it was based on the tragedy of Eric’s young sons fall from a hotel balcony.  Once you know that and you still don’t tear up at this song, you my friend are soulless!

Under The Bridge – Red Hot Chili Peppers

I first heard Chili Peppers from my cousin who loved Blood Sugar Sex Magic and this song particularly.  I remember the video and the lead singer with long hair.  Truth be known…this isn’t my favorite style of music but since this band is saturated in the mainstream it’s hard not to know all the popular songs. But I do respect this kind of music..it’s not the worst I’ve heard and at least I can stand listening to it!

Smells Like Teen Spirit – Nirvana

And here it is.  I don’t think I need to explain much about this song since a lot of people have already analyzed and dissected (probably too much if you ask me) the metaphors and lyrics…it’s a great song.  Please leave it at that.  If you keep twisting it about in your head you’ll just come up to a conclusion that not even Kurt Cobain would find reasonable…and that is impressive!

Hazard – Richard Marx

I must admit, I had reserves about putting this in the list.  I’m not a Richard Marx fan (to say the least!) but this song was just so damn dark I wanted to share it.  This song is about a troubled teen in a town called Hazard.  he meets a girl, plans to run away but then the girl winds up dead.  Through the song, you don’t get a lot of info as to what happened but we’re still in the age of the rock video so that pretty much summed it up.  This song has so many questions on it that it has it’s own Wikipedia!

No Son of Mine – Genesis

We really are in the age of the depression songs!  This Genesis song was about a boy who left home and then was afraid to go back, feeling that his father would reject helping him.  Another really great uplifting song by this band was Another Day in Paradise about homeless people and strangers walking away from other people…just great inspirational pieces!
